A Philadelphia federal jury awarded $25.6 million to a Starbucks regional director who was fired simply for being born White. The jury found sufficient evidence to believe Shannon Phillips. While the incident happened at one of the stores she oversaw, jurors agreed that she only “was fired because of her race.” Especially because she wasn’t even present at the time police arrested two Black men. That’s called “reverse discrimination.” Up until now, it’s generally been considered impossible to discriminate against a Caucasian because they supposedly have all the advantages.

White manager wins big award

Shannon Phillips was once a regional director for Starbucks, until she was fired for being White. She filed a reverse discrimination lawsuit in October of 2019 and it’s taken until now to wind it’s way through the courts.

On Monday, June 12, the jury agreed that she had been terminated simply for “refusing to suspend” a fellow Caucasian “amid public outrage over the Black men’s arrest, which occurred after one of the men was refused access to a restroom.” He wasn’t refused because he was Black, he was refused because he wasn’t a customer. Store policy.

The paperwork which lawyers for Ms. Phillips filed with the court “alleged that Starbucks retaliated against herself and another White employee.” Black Lives Matter™ was threatening to loot and burn their locations so the company was under a lot of pressure.

They fired Phillips in a public display of their effort to “convince the community that it had properly responded to the incident.” The jury selected by the U.S. Court for the District of New Jersey really didn’t like that.

Until those persons of color walked in off the street demanding to use the facilities, Phillips cheerfully and successfully “oversaw the managers of Starbucks stores in Philadelphia, Delaware, New Jersey and Maryland.” She had been doing it for the past 13 years.

It didn’t take long for the federal jury to decide that yes, “race was a factor in Phillips’ termination.” She really had been fired for being White. They allowed her $600,000 in compensatory damages to make up for lost salary and such. Then, they decided to send a message to the rest of the corporate world. In big neon letters.

Punitive damage award

An award of punitive damages is the sort of unicorn which lawyers often hunt but rarely catch. The jury decided to send the whole nation a big bold message that yes, reverse discrimination does exist.

The jury in Ms. Phillips’ case awarded her $25 million as “punishment” for the discrimination. Being White does not make you unable to pursue justice in the same way as any other shade of the skin-tone spectrum.

For some strange reason, Starbucks doesn’t want to talk about the ruling. A spokesperson “declined to comment on the jury’s verdict.” The attorneys for Ms. Phillips likewise declined to gloat over it. The whole world became suddenly gripped by the drama after officers arrested Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson on April 12, 2018. They strolled into a Starbucks shop in the Center City neighborhood of Philadelphia.

The men could have been purple and it wouldn’t have mattered. They refused to buy a single thing but wanted to use the restroom. Possibly to use drugs in. The jury heard the 911 tape where the White manager reported “two gentlemen in my cafe that are refusing to make a purchase or leave.” She could do that. She called them “gentlemen.”

The manager was right, even though she was White. If a Caucasian junkie wandered in and wanted to shoot up in the bathroom, they would need to buy a cup of coffee first. It was a valid store policy legal in the jurisdiction.

That’s why police arrested both men and charged them with “trespassing and creating a disturbance.” They dropped those charges like a hot potato when BLM threatened to burn down the police station.
