On Tuesday, Rep. Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin’s 3rd District made a heartbreaking announcement regarding the passing of his oldest daughter, Sydney Marie (Van Orden) Martenis.
She had valiantly fought an aggressive form of cancer for a year before succumbing to her illness.
In a statement released by the family, they expressed both grief and joy at this difficult time:
“It is with the most profound sense of grief and joy that Sara Jane and I announce the passing of our oldest daughter, Sydney Marie (Van Orden) Martenis after a year of battling a very aggressive form of cancer. She died peacefully surrounded by her family. We are heartbroken that we cannot share her smile and laugh in person any longer but are so thankful that she is resting with our Lord and that we were able to spend these years with her and her family.”

The Congressman expressed deep appreciation for all those who showed kindness during this tumultuous period by thanking them for the “tender mercies” shown to their family.
The sentiment was echoed by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Twitter: “No parent should have to experience this kind of heartbreak. I’m praying for @RepVanOrden and his family during this tragic time.”
At times like these it can be difficult to take steps forward, but with such strong support from friends and loved ones alike there is much hope in sight.
As a nation we extend our deepest condolences to Rep. Derrick Van Orden’s family while wishing them strength as they navigate through these tough times ahead.
