Michigan’s attorney general, a Democrat, wants to bring federal prosecutors into her investigation of 16 state Republicans who she is threatening with nearly 20 years in prison. The individuals targeted by the AG are a group of state Republicans who signed a document protesting the certification of the state’s electoral votes for Joe Biden. Michigan was one of several states with extremely close results in the 2020 election and allegations of widespread voter fraud.
AG threatens prison for Republican protesters
Michigan AG Dana Nessel is accusing the 16 Republicans of having forged public documents, bragging to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow that she might be able to put them in prison for nearly 20 years.
The supposed crime was an incident in which the state Republican party attempted to assemble an alternative group of electors to denounce the claim that Biden had won the state.
This was a political protest in which individuals representing approximately half of the voters in the state of Michigan questioned the legitimacy and fairness of the election.
Now the Democrats are attempting to punish these protesters with decades in prison as part of the national witch hunt targeting those who have pointed out questionable aspects of the election.
Detroit has an international reputation for being generally seedy and run by Democratic party machines. No one, regardless of what they might say, would be at all shocked if there was evidence that the election had been rigged in that city.
Even if the Republicans are somehow guilty on a technicality, this attempt to throw them in prison is clearly a political witch hunt at a time when cities are packed full of known criminals who are repeatedly allowed to go free.
Political prosecution
Michigan Republicans certainly feel that they are being persecuted so the liberal AG can score political points and build her career with Rachel Maddow appearances.
Nessel has made it clear that the only reason she has not already charged the Republicans is that she hopes to have federal prosecutors punish them even more harshly.
Democrats nationwide have made a major 2022 focus out of Republicans who protested the 2020 election, with Nancy Pelosi accusing GOP-led state legislatures of carrying on the work of January 6.
Democrats have responded to Republican criticisms of election security by demanding that states implement even more unrestricted voting laws.
Abolishing basic safeguards against voter fraud and promising to have federal prosecutors lock up those who protests is doing nothing for Democrats who might wish to convince the country that the election was completely legitimate, but the base loves it.
If Dana Nessel at some point in the future decides to run for higher office she will undoubtedly boast about the draconian punishments she advocated for Republicans who challenged the Biden victory.
