A bill designed to stop a government shutdown that was packed with add-ons was stopped in its tracks within 24 hours. A notification went out Wednesday that no further votes were expected that day after first getting a notification that said votes were possible. Anna Paulina Luna posted on X that it was being re-worked. The initial resolution would have funded government through March 14.
Bill had disaster relief
It had $100 billion in disaster aid. It also had help for farmers, health care reform, rebuilding the Francis Scott Key bridge in Maryland and a pay raise for Congress, among other things.
Speaker Mike Johnson may have his back against the wall, saying he had to contend with a Democrat-led Senate and a razor thin House majority. He wanted to wait til Trump was in power.
Bill needs to be pushed against that wall
Johnson said, “We are setting up for Trump to come in roaring back with the America First agenda. That’s what we’re going to run with gusto.” A lot of Republicans don’t want this bill.
Trump and J.D. Vance put out a statement that Congress should pass it only if there’s a debt ceiling increase and no “Democrat giveaways”. The deadline to fund government is midnight Friday. A government shut down could happen otherwise.
The bill was in trouble
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries posted on X that “House Republicans have been ordered to shut down the government. And hurt the working class Americans they claim to support. You break the bipartisan agreement, you own the consequences that follow.”
The Democrat strategy is to just not do normal procedure, pile everything up and force it last minute. Musk was excited this bill was shot down in flames. He posted on X, “Your elected representatives have heard you and now the terrible bill is dead. The voice of the people has triumphed!”
