Democrats Suddenly Want to Change Election Laws

You knew this was coming. The Democrats are sore losers and want to change the rules since Trump won so overwhelmingly. The irony they refuse to see is that the arguments being made for destroying this would also justify eliminating the Senate. The Senate Judiciary Committee is chaired by Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois. He announced a bill this week to abolish the electoral college.

Current Democrats are short sighted

Durbin also wants to arm illegal immigrants. He joins two colleagues, Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz of Hawaii and Democratic Sen. Peter Welch of Vermont to introduce this bill for a constitutional amendment.

He started this process in 2000 before the election, wanting it to be decided by popular vote. “In 2000, before the general election, I introduced a bipartisan resolution to amend the Constitution and abolish the Electoral College. I still believe today that it’s time to retire this 18th century invention.”

Democrats don’t understand

But the founders did. Reforming the electoral college requires an amendment since it’s such a big deterrent for keeping tyrants out. Under Article V, you have to have two thirds of both Houses of Congress and three quarters of the states to have this approved. That’s a pretty big hurdle to climb.

Senate Democrats have no chance of passing this and haven’t for 20 years. But they’re fixated on it. In order for them to maintain power, they need to keep at it.

Why Democrats shouldn’t succeed here

One reason for going after this is to change the narrative around Trump’s win. All states have counted their votes, confirming Trump won the popular vote by over two million votes so the popular vote wouldn’t have kept him out. Democrats need to keep up the phrase “defending Democracy” to try to keep the Trump agenda at bay.

Another reason for continuing down this road is Democrats benefit from chaos. Eliminating the electoral college would produce huge chaos. Among other things that could come from this, imagine waiting a month for California to count their votes after the election. That state has 54 electoral votes and you know they need to time to find as many votes as they can. There would be no trust.
