Right now, the GOP and Democrat Party are in a standoff for government funding.
The current funding runs out at the end of the month, and Trump and Vance want the GOP to hold out for election integrity to accompany the spending bill.
Senator JD Vance (R-OH) is now backing Trump’s play to shut down the government until the Democrats will agree to sign election integrity legislation the GOP wants to pass.
Get It Done
Trump has been adamant that this should be part of the bill.
With a shutdown now looming, Trump posted on Truth Social, “If Republicans in the House, and Senate, don’t get absolute assurances on Election Security, THEY SHOULD, IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, GO FORWARD WITH A CONTINUING RESOLUTION ON THE BUDGET. … CLOSE IT DOWN!!!”
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was asked about the pressure being applied by Trump, and he responded, “We have two obligations right now.
“Congress has a lot of responsibilities, but two primary obligations: responsibly fund the government and make sure that our elections are free and fair and secure.
“And that’s what we’re working on. And we’ll continue and we’ll keep you posted.”
Now it would appear that Vance is on the shutdown train, stating, “Why shouldn’t we be trying to force this government shutdown fight to get something out of it that’s good for the American people?
“Like, why have a government if it’s not a functioning government?”
That all sounds great, but when push comes to shove, the GOP has always caved to Democrats.
I really don’t expect this instance to be any different because Johnson, while posturing now, knows if this shutdown occurs, it will be blamed on the GOP and could impact them during the upcoming election.
I just don’t think he is willing to play that game of chicken.
