Most of us thought that once Ron DeSantis launched his campaign, he would get a bump and close the gap to Donald Trump.
That, however, has not happened.
In fact, the complete opposite has happened.
Trump Getting Distance
In the first set of polls since DeSantis announced, he has fallen further behind Trump.
The latest Yahoo News/YouGov survey now has Trump leading 53-25, increasing by eight points.
In a head-to-head match, Trump has also increased by 10 points, now leading DeSantis 55-31 percent.
The polling was not all good news, however.
In general election polling, Trump has lost ground to Biden, now trailing 48-41, losing five points since the last election.
This is and what has been my main concern about Trump’s campaign all along.
Trump started off his campaign avoiding the childish nonsense, promising to stay focused on the issues.
Since it became clear that DeSantis was going to run, Trump has reverted to his old ways, and it has cost him in national polling, as he has continued to slide back.
If memory serves, Trump was up by six or seven points against Biden at one point, but since he started with the nicknames and attacking DeSantis, he has continuously slid backward.
The only thing I can think of is that Trump believes he can do this to win the primary, then possibly switch gears during a general election and reverse this trend, or at least I hope that is his thought process.
All I know is that if he wins this primary and loses the general election, nobody will ever forgive him for allowing Biden to have another four years in office.
