Bandits Attack Communities, Kill 10, Abduct 33 Women

Bandits attacked villages in the northern Nigerian state of Zamfara on December 26, killing ten people and abducting 33 women. Nigerian newspaper Premium Times reports that the attacks occurred in 15 communities in the late hours of Christmas and the early hours of Boxing Day. Banditry is a major problem in Nigeria, especially in the northern states where armed groups prey on regions with little government control.

Bandits launch Christmas raid

Bandits moved from village to village on motorcycles overnight with no security forces present to put up any resistance as they had their way with local communities.

The raiders were looking for food and valuables, in addition to carrying off local women. At least ten people were killed and several more were injured trying to escape.

Survivors fled to the security of a larger town in the area, where they have been left homeless and have not received help from authorities.

Thousands of people have been killed or kidnapped by bandits in Nigeria this year. Ransoming hostages has become a lucrative business for criminals in the lawless north of the country.

Many Nigerians in the affected regions feel that there might as well be no government, given the complete absence of security which faces rural populations.

The bandits apparently felt no pressure to speed up the raids, as they reportedly spent hours searching shops and homes for valuables without encountering any security response.

Nigeria struggles to control northern states

Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa, but other areas of development have not come close to matching the rapid population growth.

Buildings frequently collapse even in upper-class neighborhoods in Lagos due to a massive demand for housing which has spawned thousands of poorly constructed and cheaply made structures.

Bandits operate freely in much of the country with minimal opposition from the central government. Local governments are generally no more competent.

The banditry problem is an old one but it has gotten worse in the last decade. Ethnic and religious conflicts, as well as clashes between herders and farmers, have historically spawned conflict in the region.

Economic struggles have also played a part in pushing Nigerians into bandit groups as an easier alternative to finding steady work.

The state government acknowledged the attacks but claimed that the villages did have government protection at the time. There has not been a major response from police yet.
