The House and Senate have just passed funding legislation that will keep the government operational for the next three months.
Some would say that Speaker Johnson (R-LA) saved the GOP in the upcoming election cycle by avoiding a shutdown.
That will more than likely depend on how Trump reacts to the funding.
The Kingmaker
For now, Donald Trump is the law in the Republican Party.
His people are running the RNC and for the most part, Republicans are looking to him for guidance on legislation that is passed.
Trump was adamant that he wanted the SAVE Act, which is voting integrity legislation, to be included in the funding package.
Johnson tried to get it passed, but it never made it out of the House, so he stripped down the funding legislation, leaned on Democrats to pass it, then sent it on to the Senate, where it also passed.
Johnson avoided a government shutdown, which would have been a disaster for Trump and the GOP in the upcoming election.
The media and Democrats were chomping at the bit to blame the GOP if the government shut down, so this, in my opinion, was a good move by Johnson.
However, if Trump objects because the SAVE Act was not included, it will likely be the end of Johnson’s career as Speaker.
Honestly, if I were Trump, I would defend Johnson and publicly say that he did what he thought was necessary to save the party and keep the government open.
I would rather do that and roll the dice in the upcoming election than try to pass that legislation if Republicans can get complete control of the government.
It’s a gamble, but if the government was shut down, I believe the GOP would have been massacred in the upcoming election.
