House Majority Whip Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) has been in Democrat leadership forever.
It seemed as though leadership as a whole decided to step down and turn over leadership to the next generation of Democrats with Pelosi and Hoyer walking away from their roles.
Clyburn, however, wants to remain in leadership.
He just got some bad news, however.
Challenge!
We would have expected that once Clyburn announced that he was going to run for Assistant Leader in the House, the caucus would have just let him have his way.
That is not going to happen, however.
Rep. David Cicilline (R-R.I.) has announced that he is going to challenge Clyburn for the position.
He stated, “With so much at stake, I think it is critical that the House Democratic Leadership team fully reflect the diversity of our caucus and the American people by including an LGBTQ+ member at the leadership table, which is why I’ve decided to run for Assistant Leader.”
When Clyburn was asked why he is still running when everyone else is stepping down, he said it was “biblical.”
He stated, “I’ve always said there is a healthy respect – it’s biblical with me – we need to have a healthy blend of strength and knowledge.
“And look at leadership: the South is left out of it.
“And what I’m doing is trying to make sure that we do not tilt too far to the east or too far to the west but maintain what we have here.”
The general feeling of the caucus is that Clyburn will be ousted, as the caucus is ready to move forward and allow new leadership.
One House Democrat stated, “It was the sense of the caucus that the three top leaders could provide counsel but would not have official leadership posts.
“Many of us think very highly of Jim Clyburn, but these complications will have potential to divide a remarkably unified caucus.”
