81 People Executed in Front of Everyone

Mass executions still happen in some places. In this case, Saudi Arabia executed 81 for crimes ranging from killing to belonging to militant groups. It’s the largest in their country in recent history. They’re run by Islamic law with the Quran being their holy book. Although the media is state run, it said each person was afforded an attorney and was judged according to state law. Executions are done by beheading.

More were executed recently

Than in January of 1980 when 63 were executed for storming the Grand Mosque in Mecca in 1979. That is their holiest site.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson plans to visit Saudi Arabia to talk about oil prices. Executions dropped during COVID but they still happened.

Executed for murder

The state run Saudi Press said people were executed for being “convicted of various crimes, including the murdering of innocent men, women and children”. Al Qaida is not immune from these, in fact they were among those that were beheaded.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels also lost their lives. A total of 73 Saudis, seven Yemenis and one Syrian. It’s not known where the executions took place.

The press stated

The Saudi Press made a statement, “The accused were provided with the right to an attorney and were guaranteed their full rights under Saudi law during the judicial process, which found them guilty of committing multiple heinous crimes that left a large number of civilians and law enforcement officers dead,”

Saudi state television also said those executed “followed the footsteps of Satan”. It drew international criticism.

Other countries distanced themselves

Soraya Bauwens is a deputy director of Reprieve, a London based advocacy group. She said, “The world should know by now that when Mohammed bin Salman promises reform, bloodshed is bound to follow.”

Ali Adubusi is the director of the European Saudi Organization for Human Rights. He thought some of these were carried out secretly and had nothing to do with human rights. He said, “These executions are the opposite of justice.”

People last executed

The last time this was done was January 2016 when 47 people were put to death including a Shiite cleric who often rallied demonstrations. On one hand, Crown Prince Mohammed has released some restrictions, such as allowing women to drive.

On the other, he had newspaper columnist Jamal Khashoggi killed and dismembered and oversaw Yemen airstrikes that killed civilians. He had discussed the death penalty with a news outlet, saying payment had been accepted to halt many executions.

The Quran insists on the guilty being executed

The prince spoke on the Saudi channel Al-Arabiya.

“Well about the death penalty, we got rid of all of it, except for one category, and this one is written in the Quran, and we cannot do anything about it, even if we wished to do something, because it is clear teaching in the Quran, If someone killed someone, another person, the family of that person has the right, after going to the court, to apply capital punishment, unless they forgive him. Or if someone threatens the life of many people, that means he has to be punished by the death penalty. “Regardless if I like it or not, I don’t have the power to change it.”
