Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has fled his own capital to escape from the massive trucker protest which descended on Ottawa over the weekend. Trudeau proclaimed that he is “not intimidated” by the protest but he evacuated himself and his family to an undisclosed location outside of the city before the protest could even begin. Some of the truckers say that they will stay in Ottawa for “as long as it takes.”
Trudeau flees from Ottawa
The protest began as a reaction to new Covid restrictions which require truck drivers to be vaccinated to drive across the border and move goods to and from the United States.
It quickly became a more general anti-Trudeau protest and Canadian liberals have been having a very difficult time since the convoy arrived in the capital.
Truck drivers have been blaring their horns continuously and refuse to leave or quiet down until Trudeau’s government bows to their demands.
The prime minister himself has said that he will not even consider meeting with the protesters to hear their concerns, adding that he is “disgusted” by their presence in Ottawa.
Conservative Party leaders have embraced the protest, with opposition leader Erin O’Toole and other members of his party taking the opportunity to kick Trudeau while he’s down.
Support both in Canada and from abroad has been widespread for the truck drivers and other protesters; there is no shortage of people who are happy to see an establishment liberal government be made to sweat for any reason.
Truckers vow to stay in capital
The government has attempted to go on the offensive against the protesters, rather than offering a chance to move the discussions into a more formal space.
Trudeau and other liberals have called attention to a woman allegedly seen dancing on Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial.
A deplorable act, but certainly not one endorsed by most of the protesters. The prime minister said that desecrating memorials in unacceptable, though he was nowhere to be seen when memorials and churches were destroyed by leftists.
The vast majority of protesters have been accused of nothing more than peacefully making their presence known outside of the Canadian Parliament.
While a few protesters have been accused of vandalism, more have been seen picking up trash and respectfully and cleaning statues.
If the truckers are serious about staying in Ottawa for as long as it takes, Trudeau might not be able to return to the capital at all until he gets over his fear of the protesters.
