Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz resigned immediately once President Trump picked him for Attorney General. Since that fell through he will not return but will fight from a different place. He won his election but he’s not coming back. House Ethics were due to vote about releasing a report about an investigation against him. Both sides criticized the pick over sexual misconduct.
Gaetz is bold
Johnson spoke about it.
“I asked him what the reasoning was, and he said, ‘Well, you can’t have too many absences.’ So under Florida State law, there’s about an eight week period to select and fill in a vacant seat. If we start the clock now, if you do the math, we may be able to fill that seat as early as January 3, when we take the new oath of office for the new Congress. So Matt would have done us a great service by making that decision as he did on the fly, and so we’re grateful for that.”
Gaetz spoke to Charlie Kirk about withdrawing from Attorney General consideration and not returning to Congress. “I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s going to be from a new perch. I do not intend to join the 119th Congress.” He didn’t want to be a distraction to Trump’s work.
Johnson continued that Matt is a reformer. “He’s a reformer in his mind and heart, and I think he’ll bring a lot to the table on that.”
Trump wants the weaponization ended
Trump nominated Gaetz and spoke of him. “Matt is a deeply gifted and tenacious attorney, trained at the William & Mary College of Law, who has distinguished himself in Congress through his focus on achieving desperately needed reform at the Department of Justice.”
If we’re going to have the DOJ, there needs to be integrity and transparency in it. Even if Gaetz is unable to move forward, he was excited with Pam Bondi and praised the move.
Gaetz is excited to serve
But it will be in a different capacity after the second allegation of sexual misconduct appeared. Gaetz posted on X, “@PamBondi is a stellar selection by President Trump for Attorney General. Pam and I worked closely together when she was Florida’s Attorney General and I chaired Criminal Justice in the state house. She’s a proven litigator, an inspiring leader and a champion for all Americans. She will bring the needed reforms to DOJ.”
Trump had originally finished his thought,
“On the House Judiciary Committee, which performs oversight of DOJ, Matt played a key role in defeating the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, and exposing alarming and systemic Government Corruption and Weaponization. Matt will root out the systemic corruption at DOJ, and return the Department to its true mission of fighting Crime, and upholding our Democracy and Constitution. We must have Honesty, Integrity, and Transparency at DOJ. Under Matt’s leadership, all Americans will be proud of the Department of Justice once again.”
