For years now, India and Canada have had a long, tumultuous history however, this latest development in their relations are very concerning to say the least. Their relations have continued to deteriorate for some time now due to  Ottawa’s harboring of Sikh terrorists which present an imminent threat to India.

Recently, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a prominent Khalistani separatist leader who is considered a terrorist by Indian authorities, released a video warning Sikhs against flying with Air India on November 19th. Pannun threatened potential travelers with life-threatening consequences should they choose to fly on the airline that day.

Independent reported on the threat:

“’We are asking the Sikh people to not fly via Air India on 19 November. There will be a global blockade. Do not travel by Air India or your life will be in danger’, he said, repeating the threats in a video circulating on social media. ‘It is my warning to the government of India’, said Mr Pannun, who was earlier rumored to have been killed in a car accident in the US.”

The date was chosen deliberately since it marks the final match of the international men’s cricket World Cup in India that same day, further complicating matters between the two countries.

Independent also added:

“’It is the same day on which the final match of the World Terror [sic] Cup will be played. It will be shown to the world that a genocide of Sikhs happened in India and India did it. When we liberate Punjab, the name of these airports will be Shahid Beant Singh and Shahid Satwant Singh airport’, said Mr Pannun, referencing the two separatist leaders who assassinated former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi in October 1984.”

Indian officials declared they would be discussing this matter with Canadian authorities despite Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claiming there was Indian involvement in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar; another Sikh separatist leader and Canadian citizen.

In September, New Delhi asked Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence after these accusations were made public causing Canada to withdraw 41 diplomats from India soon afterwards.
