Over 100 House Democrats have made their intentions known, sending President Joe Biden a letter in an attempt to pile on the pressure.
They are demanding more generous benefits for migrants who have illegally crossed into the United States by authorizing them to work, increasing parole time and reducing the waiting period before they can apply for a legal work permit.
The Democrats argue that this would give asylum seekers stability, so that they can support themselves and their families while contributing to the economy. However, some are concerned about how this will impact American workers’ wages.
In an open letter signed by over one hundred House Democrats, they urged President Biden and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to increase the number of Temporary Protected Status labels given out which would expedite work authorization applications.
They also want asylum seekers to be allowed to apply for work authorization as soon as they file their claim instead of having a mandatory 150-day waiting period.
This could help alleviate some of the burden on underfunded community groups who are providing housing, food, and health services during this time.
The issue with allowing newly arrived migrants to work in the United States is that it may reduce wages for American workers according to immigration economist George Borjas’ study highlighted by Western Journal.
He found that “the immigration surplus of $35 billion comes from reducing wages of natives in competition with immigrants by an estimated $402 billion a year, while increasing profits or the incomes of users of immigrants by an estimated $437 billion.”
Estimates indicate there could be between 100,000 and 800,000 new arrivals in 2023 alone which has overwhelmed Democrat-run cities like New York City where Mayor Eric Adams warned it could “destroy” his city if President Biden does not take action soon.
