It recently came to light that Judge Tanya S. Chutkan, who is presiding over former President Donald Trump’s multiple charges related to his attempts to legally challenge the 2020 presidential election, has a family with a history of Marxist revolutionary activities in Jamaica.
Her grandfather, Frank Hill, was a communist revolutionary in Jamaica who was briefly jailed by the British governor during WWII because of suspicions about his “subversive activities”.
He and his brother Ken were also ousted from the People’s National Party of Jamaica for their communist beliefs.
The controversy surrounding Judge Chutkan has increased after Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz introduced a resolution seeking to censure and investigate her for displaying political bias in her role as judge due to her remarks expressing support for Black Lives Matter protesters in 2020, and her “inappropriately lamenting” that former President Trump “remains free to this day” during an October 2022 sentencing hearing.
In addition, it was reported that she had donated $1,500 dollars to Obama’s campaign between 2008 and 2009.
Despite showing obvious partisan bias towards certain cases such as BLM protests which led to over twenty deaths compared to none proven caused by January 6 protesters, Judge Chutkan has nonetheless been given free reign whether rightly or wrongly when it comes to deciding January 6 cases.
She wrote about BLM protests in October 2021: “People gathered all over the country last year to protest the violent murder by the police of an unarmed man. Some of those protesters became violent […] But to compare the actions of people protesting […] To those of a violent mob seeking overthrow the lawfully elected government is a false equivalency”.
She also noted how the incident posed a real danger towards democracy which cannot be ignored despite its non-violent nature when compared with other causes such as BLM protests which have resulted in death or destruction of property.
