In the wake of former US Attorney General Bill Barr’s strong opposition to Donald Trump’s potential 2024 GOP nomination, the Republican Party is left to speculate what will happen in the upcoming primary cycle.
The GOP has been split between those who support and oppose Trump’s candidacy, with many well-known figures weighing in on both sides.
It’s clear that this election will be a critical one for Republicans as they decide who will lead them into the future.
In an interview with NBC News, Barr made it clear that he “strongly oppose[d] Trump for the nomination and [would] not endorse [him].”
When asked about how he would vote if the general election were between Trump and President Joe Biden, he said, “I’ll jump off that bridge when I get to it.”
NEW: Former Attorney General Bill Barr says he will ‘jump off’ a bridge if Donald Trump wins 2024 GOP primaries.
“I have made clear that I strongly oppose Trump for the nomination and will not endorse Trump,” Barr said.

His concerns about a potential Trump presidency were expressed more succinctly in his conversation with Geraldo Rivera back in May; Barr stated that despite any popular policies advocated by him, Trump himself lacked the discipline and strategic thinking necessary to execute them effectively.
He noted that what might come from a second term of Donald Trump could potentially be chaotic for the United States.
Out of 44 individuals contacted who served in Trump’s Cabinet, only four have publicly endorsed him for reelection including former acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, final Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, former budget chief Russell Vought and former acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell.
However Mick Mulvaney (Trump’s former Chief of Staff) has gone against this grain expressing his opinion that “if anyone can lose to Joe Biden…it would be [Trump].”
Mike Pence (former Vice President) and Nikki Haley (former Ambassador to UN) are also contending for the GOP nomination – Pence receiving endorsement from Dan Coats (former Director of National Intelligence).
One thing remains certain: the upcoming primary elections will be highly contested amongst those looking for their chance at securing the GOP nomination.
