California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom said conservative media made it sound like he wasn’t open to these payments when indeed he was. The California Reparations Task Force recently voted that a monetary apology should be issued with the amount of $1.2 million. This is to be distributed to black Californians that have been subject to a wide variety of injustices. He appointed five out of nine members.

Newsom put down conservative media

Anthony York is Newsom’s chief communication advisor. He spoke with the Sacramento Bee. “The sensationalized framing in pieces published by outlets like Fox News and others is inaccurate. The Governor looks forward to reviewing the final report — and all recommendations — when complete.”

Newsom praised their work but stopped short of saying he was ok with the proposed payout amounts. He said addressing the injustices will involve more than just cash payments.

He needs to see the report

Once it’s completed. He’s not refusing to do the cash payouts. One of the task force members, Democrat Steve Bradford, says he doesn’t think state lawmakers are going to approve of the payments. Bradford says Newsom is just acknowledging political reality.

Bradford noted, “I’m realistic enough to know that we might not have colleagues who are willing to do that. I think he’s setting a real realistic expectation that there probably won’t be check payments in the tune of or the amount that we’ve batted around for the last two years since we started this process.”

Newsom signed the bill

To create this task force in 2020. Assemblywoman Shirley Weber had authored it. The task force has explored ways to compensate eligible California blacks for a ton of injustices since the state entered the Union in 1860.

The state joined the Union outlawing slavery but at the time the draft didn’t pass laws to guarantee freedom. Task force members thought an apology should be provided as well to “censure of the gravest barbarities carried out on behalf of the State. Reparations are not only morally justifiable, but they have the potential to address long-standing racial disparities and inequalities.”
