I have heard and seen some judges say some pretty harsh things to convicted defendants over the years.
However, I can say, without a doubt, I have never heard anything remotely close to what a judge told Arthur Williamson during his trial.
In no uncertain terms, the judge told the man, “Take yourself out.”
Worthless
Williamson had been convicted of a horrific crime.
He fatally stabbed and bludgeoned a man with a hammer as well as assaulting two underage children (five and 10).
He also assaulted the man’s longtime girlfriend.
The victim was Jim Matthews, a local news anchor at WWJ.
Williamson reportedly knew Matthews’ girlfriend, Nichole Guertin, and had gone to the house to smock crack while Matthews was working.
When Williamson told Guertin to role-play for him, she refused, so he cut her throat and zip-tied her wrists and ankles.
Then he attacked the children.
When Matthews came home, Williamson hit him on the head with a hammer, then cut his throat.
Somehow, Guertin managed to escape with her daughter and called police.
When police arrived, Matthews was dead and his son was severely injured and tied up in a closet.
Macomb County Circuit Court Judge James Biernat went off, stating, “You’re a pedophile, you’re a murderer and you’re the embodiment of evil.
“The only thing that’s amazing is you didn’t kill all of them.”
Then he dropped the hammer, stating, “Try to commit suicide before you do any of this.
“Take yourself out so you don’t kill people and try to rape 5-year-olds.”
The boy wrote a statement that was read aloud by prosecutors before sentencing, stating, “You ruined all of our lives. … You put me and my mom and my sister through hours of hell. …You are evil.
“You left me with trauma. We didn’t deserve what you did.”
If there was ever a justification for the death penalty, this would be it.
