Mindful of the six people killed at Covenant School in Nashville, Governor Bill Lee thought it might help to speak to his state. A 28 year old transgender killed three 9 year old children and three adults at the elementary school run by Covenant Presbyterian Church. Police said the shooter executed a targeted attack. We’re all grieving. Lee’s wife Maria was scheduled to have dinner with one of the victims.
Lee spoke to Tennessee
Lee posted a video to social media, “Some parents woke up without children. Children woke up without parents, without teachers. Spouses woke up without their loved ones.”
Cynthia Peak was among those killed. She and Lee’s wife Maria were lifelong friends.
Lee understands
He understands there shouldn’t be hate or rage and spoke on that. “Six innocent lives. Three of them were children. We’re enduring a very difficult moment. I understand there is pain, I understand the desperation to have answers, to place blame, to argue about a solution that could prevent this horrible tragedy. But this is not a time for hate or rage. That will not resolve or heal.”
Lee praised the efforts of the local police department, naming in particular those who fired the fatal shots at the shooter. He spoke with the two officers Rex Engelbert and Michael Collazo.

Lee saw those who fought evil
“While we saw the worst of humanity, we also saw the best of humanity: in the police officers who ran into danger directly toward a killer with no regard for their own lives. Gratitude does not begin to cover it, for the utter selflessness of putting their lives between the killer and the innocent.”
The three students killed were Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney, and Hallie Scruggs, the daughter of the Senior Minister Chad Scruggs. Dr. Katherine Koonce, the principal, and the custodian Mike Hill were also killed.
