The Washington DC police chief Robert Contee III spoke about the recent shooting the news was calling racist.  A 13 year old male was shot. He assured people this will be looked into.  Nobody wants this.  The person who shot the teenage boy is not connected to the police force but he is African American.  Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed that he is a public employee for DC and that he’s been placed on leave.

The chief wasn’t happy

“There’s been too much misinformation swirling around this incident, too many people have made assumptions about this case, and it is unfair to the grieving family. Spreading of inaccurate information is dangerous, reckless, and has the potential to adversely impact the investigation and the relationships in our community.  We recognize the community’s desire to get the details of this incident, but we must also acknowledge that the ongoing nature of the investigation prevents us from sharing specifics that could jeopardize the integrity of this case.”

Contee acknowledged that yes, people want to know what happened but there’s been too many assumptions.  “It’s not about getting it fast but about getting it right.  This process takes time.  People are making allegations centered around race, and that is wrong.”

The chief didn’t find a weapon

Karon Blake, the deceased teenage boy, didn’t have a weapon on him.  Police said two people appeared to flee the scene.  The shooting happened just before 4 am Saturday.

A release noted that

“[d]etectives’ investigation at the scene revealed that a male inside of a residence, at the listed location, heard noises and observed someone that appeared to be tampering with vehicles.  The male resident went outside, armed with a registered firearm, to further investigate. There was an interaction between a juvenile male and the male resident. During the interaction, the male resident discharged his firearm striking the victim.”

The chief spoke about the shooter

It seems the person who shot Blake called police and tried to do CPR.  Police arrived during the attempt.  The shooter’s firearm was legal.

A grand jury will decide whether there will be charges or not.  Prosecutors will help determine whether there should be criminal charges as well.
