Full speed ahead, McCarthy has the gavel. Among the things on his to-do list is to remove the Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar from the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee over past antisemitic remarks. Although as Speaker he might not have that power alone, he’ll certainly push for it. When McCarthy tweeted that reminder out, a Twitter user pointed out that the whole House has to vote her out.
McCarthy understands
That he at least must make the attempt. He spoke about this a couple times. Once was at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s 2022 conference in Las Vegas. “We watch antisemitism grow, not just on our campuses, but we watched it grow In the halls of Congress.”
He spoke about it again to Fox, “I promised you last year that as Speaker, she will no longer be on Foreign Affairs, and I’m keeping that promise.” He tweeted that sentiment out.
Last year, I promised that when I became Speaker, I would remove Rep. Ilhan Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee based on her repeated anti-semitic and anti-American remarks.

McCarthy was reminded
Another user said he might not have that power alone. It might take more. “The Speaker does not have the power to remove a member from a standing committee. Foreign Affairs is a standing committee. Each party has their own rules and procedures for assigning committee roles. Only a majority vote by the entire house could remove Rep. Omar.”
The party doesn’t have the huge expected majority so he can just easily ram this through. He might not have the votes to do it.

McCarthy wants to take action
There are places where certain language doesn’t belong. One of those is in Washington, DC. Omar was elected in 2018 and thought it was all about the money. She said it was “all about the Benjamins” referring to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. She tweeted out, “We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S., Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban.” The United States and Israel are nothing in comparison to the Taliban.
This past spring Omar complained about Christians breaking out in song on an unknown flight and was blasted for it. She tweeted out to three million users, “I think my family and I should have a prayer session next time I am on a plane. How do you think it will end?” If she has a problem with the free expression of a religion, she’s in the wrong country.
