Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is the day-to-day leader of Saudi Arabia. He mocked Biden behind the President’s back. It seems the two had made a secret deal to increase oil production before the election. The Prince laughed it off and said he preferred the previous administration. He thinks our President is a joke. When they met, Biden didn’t act like he wanted to be there to begin with.
The Prince poked fun
At Biden’s mental problems. He’s not impressed and hasn’t been for a long time. Biden didn’t do himself any favors.
The President repeatedly disparaged the Prince while campaigning, the administration is against Saudi Arabia in Yemen and we’re working with Saudi Arabia’s biggest enemy, Iran. Biden would not talk with Saudi Arabia for more than a year. There needs to be some kind of dialogue between world leaders.
The Prince doesn’t trust or respect
Aaron David Miller is a veteran U.S. diplomat in the Middle East. He said, “Rarely has the chain of broken expectations and perceived insults and humiliations been greater than they are now. There’s almost no trust and absolutely no mutual respect.”
The administration kept saying the visit had nothing to do with oil. Come to find out it actually did. They thought they had a deal worked out and it wasn’t.
Met with the Prince
Saudi meetings started in the spring, trying to secure a “private oil deal” that would increase oil production by 400,000 barrels starting in July rather than the originally planned September. Officials thought a deal for an additional 200,000 barrels more per day starting in September was done.
OPEC announced on June 2 about the additional 400,000 barrels per day. That same day Biden announced he’d travel to Saudi Arabia. Biden got to Jeddah July 15. The price of oil was starting to come down. The Prince promised the moon and backed out of the deal. The Saudis said production would be increased to a huge 11 million barrels per day. But the deal fell through. The administration couldn’t save it and wondered why they’d been stabbed in the back.
