Has there ever been a time when having “only 83%” or “only 72%” vaccinated was considered bad? Even with the current immunizations for school entry, there’s always going to be people that will refuse. This doesn’t apply to COVID because it’s about power, not health. The mandates are going to kill in more than one way. Veteran staff are going to be fired making the labor shortage worse.
The mandates could cause the city to burn down
If there aren’t enough firefighters, how far out do the calls need to go for a fire? Would a building wind up being burned to the ground before firefighters get there?
More than 2,000 New York City firefighters went on medical leave to protest the vaccination mandates. NYFD Commissioner Daniel Nigro blasted personnel that took part in the “sickout”, saying, “Irresponsible bogus sick leave by some of our members is creating a danger for New Yorkers and their fellow Firefighters. They need to return to work or risk the consequences of their actions.” So are you going to fire them, commissioner? If you do, you may not be able to hire fast enough.
NYC Mayor actually tweeted out that we’re fine
The majority of city workers are vaccinated, 91%. Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said only 16% of the force remained unvaccinated.
Commissioner Shea echoed there’s no need to worry, the mandates are actually working well, we’ll move resources around. “We will move resources around. We have had significant increase in people getting vaccinated in the past three days, and that’s the good news. The contingencies are there. New Yorkers should not, should not, be worried about this.”

The union stepped up to the plate.
Andrew Ansbro, President of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, encouraged personnel to defy the mandates. “I have told my members that if they choose to remain unvaccinated, they must still report for duty. If they are told they cannot work, it will be the department and city of New York that sends them home. And it will be the department and the city of New York that has failed to protect the citizens of New York.” Put the blame where it belongs. The mandates aren’t American!
If de Blasio isn’t going to close any firehouses, then he’s going to have to man them somehow. If personnel can’t or won’t open those doors, you’re going to need to shuffle people because there were indeed closed firehouses. There’s not enough manpower if as much as 20% of the workforce calls out sick. Attorneys General have threatened lawsuits and people have outright left jobs over the mandates.
