The Arizona audit appears to be as poorly run as the Arizona election. Auditors for the state Senate have already abandoned their explosive claims made recently which accused Maricopa County of deleting key databases. Auditors now say that they simply misread the evidence and that there was no deletion of databases in Maricopa County, directly contradicting what was seen by many as a crucial development in the process announced just days before.
Disaster for Arizona audit
The news indicates that the auditors are either severely incompetent or were intentionally seeking to feed sensationalized reports to the public .
Liberals have already latched on to the reversal, using the false report to argue that the entire audit process is simply an attempt by Republican politicians to appease an angry base.
Unfortunately for Arizona and for Trump supporters in general this so far appears to be the case. Rather than a serious investigation into allegations of fraud the Arizona audit is evidently chasing headlines with invented reports about deleted data.
Converting this audit into a partisan display like this undermines efforts nationwide to address suspicions regarding the 2020 election which might have real merit.
Democrats are likewise certain to point to the poorly handled Arizona audit in the future in response to Republican concerns about election integrity.
The rapid reversal will likely be a headache as well for former President Trump, who had quickly pointed to the report as evidence of widespread fraud which affected the results of the election in Arizona.
Democrats pounce on false audit report
Any election audit begun after such a contentious election would be an enormous commitment and risk for the party which initiated the effort. The decisions should not be taken lightly by any wise party leaders.
Unfortunately, Arizona Republican leadership appears to have rushed into a poorly handled audit without much of a plan or purpose beyond securing their own future reelections.
Republicans in the state Senate have been targeted by a barrage of accusations and attacks from Democrats nationwide as would be expected. Unfortunately, the media and even other Republicans have consistently joined in the attacks.
Now critics have been given even more ammunition to attack the entire audit process as being partisan and unnecessary in addition to their accusations of voter suppression.
The extent to which other claims made by the auditors last week are similarly the results of “misreading” is unclear, though Maricopa County authorities have denied all of the accusations.
Arizona seems to be proving currently that having a poorly run audit can be even worse than having no audit. Unfortunately for Republicans the damage in this case seems to have already been done.
