The apparent assassination attempt targets a very controversial figure in the Maldives, who claims to have been the first democratically elected leader of the country.
Nasheed served as president from 2008 to 2012, when he was forced to resign amid controversy and protests in which he claimed to have been forced out of office at gunpoint.
Nasheed has been a very vocal proponent of climate change activism and has frequently sought closer relations with the west in the majority Muslim nation.
