A 72-year-old man was just arrested on drug charges in Florida. He’s accused of being a major drug lord who’s been on the run for more than 35 years. He will now go to court to face his 1985 indictments for running drugs in Nebraska.
Drug lord captured in Florida
Howard D. Farley has been an outlaw on the run for the past 35 years. Authorities finally caught up with him and took him into custody as he was boarding a private plane in the hangar at his home.
Officials say he was 1 of 73 people indicted on conspiracy drug charges way back in 1985. Out of the 73 people indicted, Farley was the only person who was able to evade arrest for all these years.
Officials say Farley assumed a false identity and lived quietly in Florida for 35 years. He screwed up when he applied for a passport using his false identity. The false name he used belongs to an infant that died in 1955.
Police were notified and they obtained a warrant to arrest this “John Doe.” Farley was attempting to board a plane at his home when police arrived. He also had a fraudulent pilot’s license in the name of the dead person.
Neighbors had no idea
A fingerprint comparison confirmed Farley’s true identity. He was one of 73 indicted for using a rail line to distribute narcotics throughout the country back in the 80’s.
The case is being investigated by a number of agencies, including the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, the Department of Transportation, with support from the Ocala Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Harley’s neighbors were shocked to learn they were living next to a drug lord. Love’s Landing is a quiet gated community in southeast Marion County where all the homes have airplane hangars.
Neighbors knew him as “Tim” and said him and his wife were “nice people and easy to talk with.” Neighbors expressed concern over Farley’s wife and hoped she was ok. “I know her well and I don’t think she knew anything,” one of the women said. 35 years is a long time. Should the judge cut him some slack on this one?
