The politics on this is clear. Trump is proven right again. Letitia James brought down former New York governor Mario Cuomo, now she’s setting her sights on bigger prey. Trump is a good target for Democrats for a lot reasons and James is adding herself to the list. In fact, she backed out of a run for governor to focus on this. Trump has been under investigation for years and was likely checked in 2015.
Trump upset the apple cart
And if those in power can help it, nothing like this will ever happen again. James needs to finish her investigation, “I have come to the conclusion that I must continue my work as attorney general. There are a number of important investigations and cases that are underway, and I intend to finish the job.“
Her office has been investigating Trump since March of 2019, digging into his real estate holdings, looking for fraud. Will she be honest with what she finds? We don’t know. She’s also after the National Rifle Association, wanting to dissolve it. Trump isn’t the only one seeing the witch hunt, Cuomo sees it too.
James was running for governor
It was only announced two months ago she was running against Governor Kathy Hochul. The Trump organization declared, “This is another political witch-hunt. The only focus of the New York AG is to investigate Trump, all for her own political ambitions … This political prosecution is illegal, unethical and is a travesty to our great state and legal system.” Does anybody know how long investigations will continue? Because his influence was worldwide.
James wants to question Trump in a “civil fraud investigation.” There’s a criminal investigation in the works as well. Since he has two actions against him regarding his real estate activities, one civil and one criminal, he could refuse to be deposed.
The Fifth Amendment could be invoked here too
If Trump refuses, that’s his 5th Amendment. The information used in the civil case could be used in the criminal case. Cyrus Vance Jr, the Manhattan District Attorney, is working the criminal case.
What are the tax laws involved in his property assessments? Those may have been used as collateral for more funding. Vance and James want to know if Trump’s businesses “engaged in a pattern of criminal fraud by intentionally submitting false property values to potential lenders.” In order to receive any loans, Trump would have to have been checked previously.
