There is nothing I hate more than seeing stories of suicide by a veteran.
It makes it far worse when their families are brought into the tragedy.
In this case, this is both tragic and horrific.
Horror Strikes
Charles Slacks Jr., 42, clearly had some type of mental break regarding his ex-wife, who is still serving.
Slacks served from 1999-2006, and was divorced from Aletha Holliday, but they did share two children.
Holliday did have a third child from another relationship.
She was apparently in her home with another soldier from her post, but according to the report, they did not have a personal relationship.
Why he was in the house with her at the time is not known.
Slacks, who still had a key to the home, must have thought something was going on.
He entered the home and shot the soldier, then pushed his way past his ex-wife to go upstairs to the children.
Holliday attempted to call for help when she heard gunshots.
As she moved to the steps, she then saw Slacks at the top of the steps, who then took his own life.
The shots she heard were of Slacks murdering his children and stepchild, who were ages 5,6, and 11.
State Sen. Thomas McElveen, who represents Sumter, stated, “As a father, I am absolutely nauseated up here talking about it.”
Please keep our home community of Sumter in constant prayer. Our hearts hurt for all of the victims involved, and there will certainly be difficult days ahead for our community in the wake of an evil, tragic, and unthinkable act.

This is just an utterly heartbreaking report, but we need more people to see these so we can address the issues of our service members after they come home, oftentimes, when the real battle begins.
