House Republican leadership has denied Democrats’ requests to approve congressional visits to El Salvador’s mega prison, the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), to check on criminal illegal aliens who were deported there from the United States.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) made the announcement via a letter to two Democrats, Reps. Robert Garcia (D-CA) and Maxwell Frost (D-FL), who sent a request to Comer a few days prior demanding to visit CECOT. The letter was also shared in an X post.
“If Democrats wish to travel to El Salvador and meet with a foreign illegal MS-13 gang member, they can spend their own money to do so,” Comer wrote in the X post, sharing the letter. “I will not approve a single dime of Oversight Committee taxpayer funds for use on the excursion Democrats have requested.”
In their demand, Garcia and Frost stated that they wanted to visit the criminal illegal aliens being held at CECOT, while also specifically mentioning Kilmar Abrego Garcia — an illegal alien from El Salvador who has been confirmed to be a member of the violent gang MS-13. Democrats falsely claim that Abrego Garcia was a “Maryland man” who was unlawfully deported and imprisoned, but that is a lie. While a small step was accidentally skipped in the deportation process, Abrego Garcia was an obvious candidate for deportation: he is a member of a gang that has been designated a foreign terror organization, he has a history of domestic violence, he has been accused of human trafficking, and above all — he is an illegal alien, meaning that regardless of his crimes, he can be deported to his home country of El Salvador.
Garcia and Frost noted in their demand letter that they would “gladly include” any House Republicans who want to join them in their trip to visit deported criminals.
In his letter responding to their demand, Comer noted that the Democrat congressmen had demanded that he approve taxpayer dollars to fund “official travel for you both to visit the country of El Salvador to meet with a foreign MS-13 gang member whose wife accused him of crimes and who is strongly suspected of human trafficking.”
Comer went on to slam Garcia and Frost, stating that it is “absurd that you both displayed active hostility for over two years toward the Committee’s oversight of the Biden Border crisis and the consequences of millions of illegal aliens entering the country, yet now, you are seeking travel at Committee expense to meet with foreign gang members.”
