This week, the verdict finally came on the bribery case against Senator Robert Menendez (D-N.J.).
Menendez had faced corruption charges before, and he always managed to slither out of trouble, but not this time.
After the guilty verdict was announced, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) immediately called for Menendez to resign.

I am all for waiting out due process, but the nature of the charges against Menendez warranted his immediate removal from the Senate.
Schumer, however, wanted to allow this all to play out, but his tune has now changed.
After the verdict was announced, Schumer stated, “In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign.”
Reports have already surfaced that Menendez is likely to submit his resignation, but if he does not, Schumer can use Article 1, Section 5 to expel him from the Senate.
Schumer would need two-thirds of the Senate to vote in favor of the removal, and I doubt that would be a problem.
Menendez has been an embarrassment to the party, refusing to resign and even registering as an independent for the 2024 election to try to save his seat.
The man has been corrupt his entire career, yet the Democrat Party tolerated him and even gave him top committee assignments knowing full well that Menendez was on the take.
The fact Menendez beat the other charges likely led to his hubris in this case, being so bold as to hold gold bars and stacks of cash in his home that he had received from businessmen bribing Menendez to push policies that would benefit other nations.
This is the sad state of our government today, which seems to be filled with inept and corrupt officials.
