Milei won in a landslide, receiving 55.95% of the vote with Sergio Massa receiving 44.04%. He’ll take office December 10. He’s a capitalist, anti-socialist that lead his group Liberty Advances to victory. There’s a couple positions conservatives might align themselves with that Milei does not, among them opposing abortion and encouraging business dealings with communist countries such as China.
Milei was called
Massa conceded to him before election results were final. Massa bowed out with 86.59% of the vote counted. This turnaround is curious because Massa beat Milei in the first round October 22.
The current President Alberto Fernández has the country in a financial crisis. Inflation, joblessness and social anxiety are running rampant. Neither Fernandez nor the current Vice President, Fernández de Kirchner, ran again. The latter was convicted of corruption the end of 2022.
Courts found her guilty
So it was smart to just not run. Massa wishes the new President the best and delivered a speech to that effect. “I want to say that, obviously, the results are not what we expected and I have communicated with Javier Milei to congratulate him and wish him luck because he is the president that the majority of Argentines chose for the next four years.”
There was some shock since results weren’t out yet and he had to speak over jeers. “I did it convinced that the most important thing we have to leave Argentines with is the message that coexistence, dialogue, and respect for peace before so much violence and disqualification is the best path that we can take.”
Milei will be helped
Alberto Fernández said he would help with an orderly transition. “The people have expressed their will. Millions of Argentines voted and defined the destiny of the fatherland for the next four years. I am a man of democracy, and I don’t value anything more than the popular will. I trust that as soon as tomorrow we will begin to work with Javier Milei to guarantee an orderly transition.”
Milei’s party is a recent entry into Congress, having started in 2021. Both the socialist and center-right movement were unpopular.
