For many years, Democrats have been desperately hounding former President Donald Trump, attempting to dig up some dirt on him. And for a while, they were battling to gain access to his tax records.

In fact, recently, they made a Supreme Court appeal in an attempt to get their hands on the documents. But fortunately, that appeal was denied.

It appears that justice has been served – at least for now.

But this isn’t the first time Trump’s taxes have caused an uproar. On Friday, September 29, federal prosecutors charged an Internal Revenue Service contractor with illegally leaking some of the former president’s tax records along with several other wealthy Americans’ information to media outlets.

This prompted outrage from lawmakers and administration officials alike – but it also appears to solve “a two-year puzzle over a security breach” according to The Wall Street Journal.

Charles Littlejohn, 38, of Washington D.C., was charged with one count of unauthorized disclosure of tax information, according to a Justice Department news release cited by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ). He faces up to five years in prison if convicted as charged under the law.

Although court records don’t name the taxpayers or news organizations involved in this case, WSJ notes that it matches two of “the largest and most consequential disclosures of private tax information” – ProPublica’s June 2021 release and The New York Times’ September 2020 disclosure regarding Donald Trump’s 2016 and 2017 tax returns respectively.

This charge represents tremendous progress in a two-year investigation into these incidents and notably connects them together for the first time ever according to WSJ reports. Littlejohn worked for an IRS contractor from 2017 through 2021 and is alleged to have stolen taxpayer information from 2018 through 2020 according to court documents which were filed via an “information” document – indicating that Littlejohn may plead guilty after all when his trial begins.

Both Littlejohn himself and his lawyer Lisa Manning declined comment when contacted by reporters shortly after he was formally notified about his charges late last week.
