Police investigating the 25-year-old murder of JonBenet Ramsey believe that genetic DNA testing might give them a new opportunity to identify the killer. Police across the country have found that popular DNA testing products have been a gold mine for solving cold cases. The JonBenet Ramsey murder is one of the most infamous unsolved cases in the country and investigators have already combed through mountains of evidence and tips.

New approach for JonBenet Ramsey investigation

Police in Boulder, Colorado did not provide too many details on what prompted the new approach to the JonBenet Ramsey case or what exactly they will be doing to apply the new technology involved.

The department said that it is actively working to find out what it can do with genetic DNA testing, a tool which has already solved several notorious murders in recent years.

The hope in this case would presumably be that, as in other cases, a relative of the killer might post results from a commercial DNA test online to find out more about their family tree.

Investigators can compare these results to DNA samples collected from a crime scene. This approach allowed police in California to identify and arrest the Golden State Killer.

There should be no shortage of available DNA to examine, given that police have already analyzed nearly 1,000 samples in relation to the crime.

The number of samples is, however, a difficulty for police in itself. The crime scene was not particularly secure and was likely contaminated by DNA from uninvolved neighbors.

Police searching for possible intruder

There has always been public speculation that the parents of JonBenet were involved somehow in her killing but investigators appear to have largely moved away from that theory.

DNA tests carried out on a sample from JonBenet’s clothing prompted police to announce that they primarily suspected an unknown third party rather than a member of the family.

Still, there was infamously no evidence of a break-in and the victim was found dead in the house. Suspicion surrounding the family is one of the main factors which has kept interest in the case alive.

The murder has been a favorite of armchair investigators but, as in many cases, public speculation does not always resemble the official investigation.

If the parents did not do it then police evidently suspect an intruder. That makes the abundance of DNA samples held by the police both an asset and a problem.

Boulder police appear to be hopeful about the prospect of new DNA testing to help solve the case but it may still be a lengthy process before any breakthrough is made.
