Now this story is certainly one of the rarer ones out there. I’m sure police officers have had their fair share of strange or even laughable calls, but this one might just take the cake.
On Thursday, September 28, police were subject to a four-hour standoff with Derek Redgate, 41, of Porter, Maine. The suspect was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and wielding a sword when law enforcement arrived on the scene.
This incident has sparked outrage in many local communities.

Local police received a call from two people who had been threatened by Redgate while he was inebriated. After they fled the property, Redgate remained alone inside the home and refused to come out when officers arrived.
It is reported that he exited his house holding a sword and began “waving it around” before retreating back inside and barricading himself within the home for four hours.
A crisis negotiation squad was then called upon to negotiate with Redgate until he peacefully surrendered at 9:30 pm that evening.
After Redgate left his house, authorities took him into custody without any further issues occurring. He was brought to a nearby hospital before being booked at Oxford County Jail where he faced charges for criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon as well as “creating a police standoff” according to NECN reports.
Outrage has been expressed among local residents about this incident given its severity and length of time involved in resolving it.
This incident involving Derek Redgate serves as an example of how important it is for citizens to remain aware of their surroundings and exercise caution if encountering someone displaying such erratic behavior due to intoxication or otherwise.
Police departments should also be commended for their response time throughout this ordeal which ultimately led to its resolution without any further harm being inflicted on anyone involved or in the surrounding area.
