The Bermuda Triangle has been a topic of mystery for many years now, and no matter the time, this phenomenon will continue to be a widely studied topic for many more years to come. And while it’s uncertain whether science or magic or something more mysterious plays a role here, some researchers claim to have unlocked a few of the Triangle’s secrets.
For centuries, sailors have passed through the mysterious triangle-shaped part of the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North America and reported strange occurrences. From ghost ships to planes and boats disappearing without a trace, many had attributed these events to some sort of supernatural power lurking in the depths.
However, one expert claims that he has ‘solved’ this mystery with a scientific explanation – and it’s still quite chilling.
According to Britannica, the Bermuda Triangle is an area roughly triangular shaped in size spanning from Florida to Greater Antilles islands in North America.
For centuries tales have abounded about lost ships and planes never being heard from again after passing through this region. These reports date back as far as 19th century when no distress signals or wreckage was ever found – thus leading many to suggest something otherworldly was responsible for these disappearances.
Nick Hutchings is a mineral prospector who believes he has solved this mystery with science rather than superstition. He thinks geology could explain why so many vessels have gone missing over time without any apparent cause or reason.
Speaking on Channel 5 documentary Secrets Of The Bermuda Triangle which aired in 2019, Hutchings suggested that rocks may be responsible for all those lost at sea explaining: “Bermuda’s basically a sea mountain – it’s an underwater volcano.”
He went on to explain that 30 million years ago this landmass was above sea level but now only its peak remains submerged beneath the waves and made up mostly of magnetite which is one of Earth’s most magnetic naturally occurring substances.
This would mean ancient mariners were likely disoriented by their navigational tools going haywire due to proximity of this rock material causing them to become lost at sea hence why so many vessels are reported missing in this region with no trace or survivors left behind.
To prove his theory Hutchinson conducted an experiment using just a small piece of rock and compass during his interview showing how easily things can go wrong if you don’t know what you’re dealing with out there on open waters.
Karl Kruszelnicki is another scientist from Sydney University based in Australia who supports Hutching’s findings but also adds that bad weather and general poor navigation skills can contribute too plus other factors such as human error making all these factors together more likely culprits than anything paranormal or supernatural related.
