House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has had a pretty bad week.
Actually, it was downright embarrassing.
It was so bad, in fact, that he may have to turn to Democrats to bail him out.
Disaster Looms
McCarthy is struggling to get the entire Republican caucus behind his budget agenda.
He could not even get a Defense spending rule passed, which virtually never happens.
As a matter of fact, there were no rule failures by the last three Speakers and there have only been eight rule failures since 1995.
This was McCarthy’s third one in just eight months.
Members of the Freedom Caucus are not willing to pass the rule because they want Ukraine spending broken out from the overall Defense budget.
Joe Biden got away with that last time, adding all the Ukraine money into a budget that was more than $800 billion, but it was never clear to the American people how much money was going to Ukraine in cash and weapons as well as weapons replenishment from our stockpiles.
If McCarthy cannot get the caucus together, he will have to make a deal to get Democrat votes to support the legislation, which will be a complete and utter disaster.
Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) added, “The ultimate outcome will be 218 Republicans and Democrats [who] will pass something that doesn’t have conservative leaning to it.”
The truly ironic thing about all of this is that this is Trump’s Speaker who cannot get several Trump-endorsed House Representatives to work together.
