Recently, Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz tossed a few threats at House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) trying to have him removed from his position over disagreements within the chamber’s Freedom Caucus. Now, McCarthy has responded to those threats and he doesn’t sound too impressed.

Punchbowl News managing editor Heather Caygle asked McCarthy about these “constant Twitter threats”, to which he appeared to brush off, saying “Oh my god, someone tweeted about me? Oh my god, I’m gonna lose the speakership because somebody tweeted about me. That would’ve happened a long time ago.”

Gaetz had made it abundantly clear earlier this month that McCarthy could be fired if he did not move forward with a vote to launch an inquiry into evidence of presidential wrongdoing uncovered by House committees.

On social media and during a radio interview, Gaetz suggested that McCarthy could face removal for resisting the impeachment push.

He wrote on Truth Social that he had worked very hard in January “ to develop a toolkit for House Republicans to use in a productive and positive way,” adding “I don’t believe we’ve used those tools as effectively as we should have.”

He went further, saying “We’ve got to seize the initiative… And if @SpeakerMcCarthy stands in our way, he may not have the job long.”

Not long ago, there was an anticipated strong argument at a closed-door meeting held by House Republicans for launching an impeachment investigation into President Joe Biden.

Sources familiar with the situation reported that McCarthy was expected to make this case strongly.

There has been increasing support from him throughout recess for opening formal investigations into business dealings of President Joe Biden’s son Hunter, as CNN previously reported.

During this meeting however, things took an unexpected turn when some members proposed removing him via motion, reportedly infuriating McCarthy who said: “If you want to file a motion to vacate, then file the f‑‑‑ing motion”.

Following the meeting he addressed reporters expressing his frustration with some members of conference stating: “We had the [Department of Defense] appropriations bill yesterday, couldn’t put it on the floor… I don’t have one complaint by any member of what’s wrong with this bill”.
