While more Ukrainian aid is being debated an American citizen journalist sits in prison. He supposedly spread Russian propaganda. This situation contradicts the President championing free speech, making it look like he doesn’t walk the talk. Biden is asking for another $24 billion for Ukraine and that’s on top of the $113 billion that’s been sent since February 2022. Nothing was said about the journalist.

Biden doesn’t care

His attention is on his pockets instead. At the United Nations he argued the aid is “the future of every country that seeks a world governed by basic rules.” The administration said nothing about a citizen journalist that sits in prison for his reporting.

Gonzalo Lira, the American, wasn’t mentioned at all in the speech that was entirely about Ukraine. Lira is a dual citizen between the United States and Chile. He was living in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv when Russia invaded.

Biden doing what he’s told

And that’s it. The journalist was arrested in May under suspicion of doing pro-Russian propaganda on his YouTube channel. He questioned the narrative around the war that’s being presented on the media and the Zelensky government.

In July he posted messages on Twitter and YouTube saying he was going to try to cross the Ukrainian border into Hungary to claim asylum after being released from prison on bail. He hasn’t been heard from since. In his final video he said if he didn’t post anything after he crossed the border it would mean he’s been arrested again. He said he would likely die in prison.

Biden is leaving him alone

Before trying to cross the border Lira said, “The American State Department knows exactly who I am and the fate that awaits me.” He maintains he’s just discussing information about the war that is publicly available.

The Ukrainian government says that Lira “had a criminal intent aimed at the manufacture, distribution materials containing justification, recognition as legitimate, denial of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, which began in 2014, as well as justification, recognition as legitimate of the temporary occupation of part of Ukraine territory.” Lira never worked for the government. “The charges against me are just because of my opinion about this conflict, I did no harm to anyone.”
