It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing of Bob Barker, beloved host of the classic game show The Price is Right.
At age 99, Barker had an incredible life that left an indelible mark on television and pet advocacy.
Barker’s career spanned many decades and earned him 19 Daytime Emmy Awards as well as a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award in 1999.
He was also honored with induction into the Television Academy’s Hall of Fame in 2004.
At the conclusion of each episode of “The Price is Right,” he made sure to leave his audience with a reminder about responsible pet ownership: “This is Bob Barker reminding you to help control the pet population — have your pets spayed or neutered.”
His dedication to this cause was inspired by his late wife Dorothy Jo who had been committed to animal rights before her death.
In an interview with The Television Academy Foundation he said “Well, Dorothy Jo was before her times as far as animals were concerned…We started talking more about it and I became more concerned about animals.”
A sentiment which he continued to practice until his last episode 16 years ago.
Though most people remember him for The Price Is Right, perhaps an even more memorable role came from Adam Sandler’s movie Happy Gilmore where he throws punches with Sandler’s character while quipping “The Price is Wrong b****.” followed by “Now you’ve had enough, b****!”
Not only did this cement his place among TV greats but it left viewers laughing at one of comedy’s best moments.
Even after retiring from television nearly two decades ago Bob Barker will always be remembered for making us laugh and advocating for animal rights.
We bid farewell to a cherished entertainer whose work will be remembered forever.
