Okay, so Ron DeSantis is finally in the race.
His campaign got off to a bit of a rough start, but it is full steam ahead now.
He has also made it quite clear where he plans on attacking Trump.
Fauci and Amnesty
As I see it, Trump has three things on his presidential record that leave him open for attack.
The vaccine, the shutdown, and amnesty for illegals.
DeSantis cannot attack Trump on the vaccine because he supported it, just not mandates.
Mandates did not come into play until the Biden administration, so I don’t see DeSantis hitting Trump there.
Allowing the lockdowns, more or less allowing Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx to make all the calls early on, that is going to be a problem.
As is the fact that Trump moved forward legislation that would have given more than two million illegal immigrants amnesty.
Trump was doing this as a concession to end DACA, but Dems did not bite.
That is where DeSantis hit Trump, stating, “I think [Trump] did great for three years, but when he turned the country over to Fauci in March of 2020 that destroyed millions of people’s lives.
“And in Florida, we were one of the few that stood up, cut against the grain, took incoming fire from media, bureaucracy, the left, even a lot of Republicans, had school open, preserved businesses.
“And so Florida, since COVID, has outperformed virtually any state in the country when you look at all these significant metrics. I mean, we’re booming, we’ve got people moving in here, wealth is coming in here.
“And so, I think when people look back, you know, that 2020 year was not a good year for the country as a whole. It was a situation where Florida started to stand alone. So I think that that’s important contrast.”
DeSantis continued, “He also attacked me for voting against an amnesty bill that he had endorsed — 2 million-person amnesty bill, Goodlatte II, in 2018.”
He added, “If you remember, that bill was like a pittance for that in exchange for a massive amnesty.”
DeSantis also went after Trump on the rising debt during his watch.
Now I do not really put the fault of that solely Trump’s feet.
The original game plan was to get the military back in shape, as well as infrastructure funding (but that did not happen), then dial it back during the second term to start attacking the national debt.
Then COVID hit, and Trump got booted before he could put the full plan in place.
On the first two points, however, DeSantis could get some grip, so we will have to watch polls over the next month and see if this works for him or not.
DeSantis has a long hill to climb, so he is going to have to be relentless in his attacks, and you know Trump is going to hit back, so this is going to get quite ugly.
