A top Republican dating back to the Watergate scandal has passed away.

The former governor of Connecticut and former US Senator, Lowell Weiker, is dead.

He was 92 years old.

Longtime Public Servant

Weiker first started to serve in 1962 when he was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly.

In 1971, he won his first term in the Senate, remaining in that seat until 1989.

He was one of three Republicans to serve on the Senate’s Special Committee on Watergate in 1973.

He was very critical of Nixon’s presidency.

Writing in his memoir, “More and more, events were making it clear that the Nixon White House was a cauldron of corruption.

“And even as disclosures kept coming, more and more national leaders were acting as though nothing especially unusual had happened.”

His other big claim to fame while serving in the Senate was sponsoring the Protection and Advocacy for the Mentally Ill Act.

He also proposed legislation that eventually evolved into the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act.

After leaving the Senate, Weiker had one more big hurrah left in his career.

He ran and won the governor’s race in 1991, leaving office in 1995.

Weiker reportedly passed away at a Middletown, CT, hospital.

Rest in peace, sir.
