Almost 20 Republicans stand against the debt ceiling deal hashed out between Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Biden. The debt limit will be suspended til after the next election, January 2025 in exchange for reduced spending. The House Freedom Caucus leads this charge. They think it’s too watered down. Rep. Chip Roy says at best it’s a temporary freeze on spending with nothing in return.

Republicans are trying to get spending under control

Rep. Scott Perry said, “This deal fails, fails completely. We will do everything in our power to stop it and end it now.” Roy is furious, “Not one Republican should vote for this deal. No one sent us here to borrow an additional $4 trillion to get absolutely nothing in return.”

Rep. Dan Bishop went a little further, putting fellow Republicans on notice. “This is a career-defining vote for every Republican.” Bishop also brought up possibly vacating the chair. It only takes one member to force that vote.

Biden and McCarthy negotiation

The Fiscal Responsibility Act is the result of weeks of negotiation and faces a number of amendments in the House Rules Committee from both sides of the aisle. A full House vote could happen as soon as Wednesday.

Because around 20 Republicans have rejected the deal, more Democrats may need to come on board should those Republicans hold firm. By and large, leftist circles are happy with it. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed solidarity, “Democrats are committed to making sure that we do our part and avoid a default.”

Janet Yellen issued warnings

She mentioned the Treasury Department was working on “extraordinary measures” since the statutory limit of $31.4 trillion had been reached. Some Republicans were sorry the Limit, Save and Grow Act of 2023 died. It was passed last month and it would have allowed the limit to be lifted by $1.5 trillion in exchange for cuts in spending.

Perry thought this recent deal was with the swamp. Lauren Boebert said she didn’t come to Congress to participate in bankrupting the country and Byron Donalds of Florida said this was a “crap deal that’s going to put you more in debt with no real changes whatsoever.”
