Yet another one of our big stars that got started in the 1960s and 1970s is dead.

Gordon Lightfoot, one of the best songwriters of our time, passed away.

He was 84 years old.

You Know You’re Good When…

One of the true tests of a songwriter is in how many different genres of artists can copy the song and it stands up.

Among others, Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Harry Belafonte, Johnny Cash, Anne Murray, and Jane’s Addiction all covered Lightfoot songs.

That is about as widespread a group of singers as you can get.

Lightfoot, who is a Canadian native, had dozens of hits, and many of them are still hanging around today, such as “If You Could Read My Mind” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted, “We have lost one of our greatest singer-songwriters.

“Gordon Lightfoot captured our country’s spirit in his music – and in doing so, he helped shape Canada’s soundscape.

“May his music continue to inspire future generations, and may his legacy live on forever.”

Lightfoot performed almost up until the day he died, with his last show being performed about a month ago.

He has held over 1,500 concerts and has more than 500 songs to his credit.

He was truly a generational talent.
