The Department of Justice appears to be on defense.
To justify the raid conducted against Donald Trump, documents are being leaked to the media.
Reports broke this week that among the documents removed from Mar-a-Lago were top-secret documents regarding the defense capabilities of foreign governments.
Game Changer
The pundits have already jumped all over this, calling the documents a “game changer” in terms of this resulting in an indictment against Donald Trump.
Former Attorney General Bill Barr even went so far as to say the DOJ is now very close to having a case to indict the former president.
This was a bit of a blow to Trump’s legal team after winning the first round of the battle to have a special master appointed.
This led to Trump’s attorneys ripping the DOJ for leaking the information to the Washington Post.
Trump’s legal team said that it was very concerned that the government would “impugn, leak, and publicize select aspects of their investigation.”
It does make us question what in the world was Trump thinking by taking these documents.
First, there is a process that must be followed to obtain documents from the archives for a presidential library or to work on memoirs.
Trump continues to be his own worst enemy on this front, constantly handing Democrats ammunition to use against him that will prevent him from making another run at the White House.
If Bill Barr is right and an indictment comes down, it probably does not matter if he is convicted or not, as nominating him would be far too risky for Republicans who must take back the White House in 2024.
