Former President Donald Trump just announced this afternoon that his home at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida was “raided” by “a large group of FBI agents.”
This breaking news comes soon after a federal grand jury had subpoenaed former Trump White House counsel Pat Cipollone and Trump Deputy Counsel Patrick Philbin in connection with a criminal investigation into the events leading up to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
According to the former president, the presence of law enforcement was entirely unannounced and the reasoning being political.
NBC News reached out to the Justice Department headquarters regarding the incident, to which a spokesperson declined to comment.
A lengthy email statement released by Trump’s Save America political committee read this:
“These are dark times for our Nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents.”
Trump continued on to also state:
“After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate.”
The former president has claimed that the raid was a desperate attempt by Democrats to weaponize the Justice System to prevent his running for the 2024 presidential election as well as harm Republicans in the upcoming midterms.
“They even broke into my safe!” Trump said. “It is political targeting at the highest level!”
Just last month The Washington Post reported on the DOJ’s investigation into Trump was part of “its criminal probe of efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.”
Details within the report described two areas that the DOJ is examining which could entrap Trump.
The two areas included “seditious conspiracy and conspiracy to obstruct a government proceeding,” and charges related to potential fraud from using fake electors or attempts to pressure government officials to claim the election was rigged.
