Over 2,000 Ukrainian people were killed in Russia’s invasion. Buildings, including homes, schools and hospitals, have been destroyed. Children are being killed too. Over 350 civilians, including 14 kids were in the death toll. Russia has lost soldiers too to the tune of 4,300 men. The Ukrainian population isn’t afraid to take up arms. The alternative is death. Russia’s military is targeting the vulnerable.
War kills people
Reuters disclosed that, “Children, women and defense forces are losing their lives every hour.” Secretary of State Antony Blinken told the UN Human Rights council that war is tearing people apart. “Reports of Russia’s human rights abuses and violations of international humanitarian law are mounting by the hour.”
He continued, “Russian strikes are hitting schools, hospitals, residential buildings, are destroying critical infrastructure, which provides millions of people across Ukraine with drinking water, gas to keep them from freezing to death.”
Ukrainian people fighting the Russians
Kharkiv is among the cities being attacked. A long Russian military convoy was on the outskirts of Kyiv. Ground forces are stationed at Belarus, the country’s southern border.
At least the UN numbers on destruction are going to be less than accurate. Different outlets may report differently.
People falling
The United Nations issued a statement in Geneva. “Most of these casualties were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a wide impact area, including shelling from heavy artillery and multi-launch rocket systems, and air strikes.” Their human rights office said the death and injury tolls are likely “considerably higher” in government controlled areas.
Both sides are going to claim very different numbers on Russian casualties. This is part of war. Russia downplays its losses while the Ukraine maintains it’s much higher. Russia said just under 500 were killed while the Ukraine said 7,000 were killed with more injured.
People can’t flee
Kharkiv is the second largest city in the Ukraine with 1.5 million people but it’s in ruins. After an air strike a police station collapsed in flames.
Mayor Vadym Boichenko said over live TV that people are blocked from leaving. “The enemy occupying forces of the Russian Federation have done everything to block the exit of civilians from the city of half a million people. We cannot even take the wounded from the streets, from houses and apartments today, since the shelling does not stop.”
