Amidst the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent conflict within the country, former world champion boxer Vasiliy Lomachenko has joined the battle.
While most members of the famous/wealthy class would run for the hills, evacuating and avoiding any conflict, it seems that Ukraine has bred a different kind of celebrity-elite. Imagine any member of Hollywood or other famous people in the United States actually taking up arms to defend their country… The thought of that happening is almost laughable.
Apparently it’s not even a question to many in Ukraine. Professional boxer Oleksandr Usyk, along with former heavyweight champions Vitali Klitschko — who also happens to be the mayor of Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv — and his brother, Wladimir, are among the long list of Ukrainians joining the fight.
The latest hero to step forward to fight for his country is former world champion boxer Vasiliy Lomachenko, who has joined a territorial defense battalion in Ukraine.

Lomachenko, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was a world champion in three different weight classes throughout his career. The 34 year old boxer currently has a 16-2 record with 11 knockouts, winning his last bout in December against Richard Commey via a unanimous decision.
Now, he’s fighting outside of the ring, and using more than just his fists. On February 27th, he appeared in a Facebook photo wearing a military combat uniform. He had originally traveled to Greece on the first day of the invasion, but had returned to his home in Odessa, the third most populous city in Ukraine, to reunite with his family soon after, according to ESPN.

Lomachenko’s next fight is currently scheduled to take place in Australia on June 5th against undisputed lightweight champion George Kambosos.
