A massive recall has been announced for nearly 250,000 heavy-duty pickup trucks made between the years of 2017-2022.

Ford is issuing a recall, warning drivers of some of its heavy-duty pickup trucks after discovering that the driveshafts can break and cause the vehicle to lose power.

The massive recall covers certain F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickup truck models between the years of 2017-2022, according to reporting by The Associated Press. The vehicles impacted by the recall have gasoline engines and aluminum driveshafts.

According to recall documents posted on the website for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the insulators beneath the trucks can loosen. If they come into contact with the driveshaft, they can cause damage due to friction, which will eventually cause the driveshaft to fracture.

The documents describe the safety risk to the driver, writing:

“A fractured driveshaft may result in loss of motive power while driving, unintended vehicle movement while the vehicle is in park if the parking brake is not applied, and secondary damage to surrounding components. A fractured driveshaft may also contact the ground which may cause loss of control of the vehicle while driving. A fractured driveshaft increases the risk of injury or crash.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 223,628 F-250 vehicles are affected, and another 23,817 F-350 vehicles are affected.

Letters will be sent out to customers in April to alert them about the recall. The vehicle owners will be told to contact dealers for a repair if necessary.

This isn’t the first time that Ford has had this same problem. The company recalled approximately 185,000 F-150 light-duty pickups with the driveshaft/insulators issue in December, according to The Associated Press.
