Technically, since Joe Biden left the race, the Democrat Party is supposed to have an open convention.
Even though Kamala Harris already has enough pledged delegates to win the nomination, she may have a roadblock to go through.
According to reports that are flying around, Senator Joe Manchin (I-W.V.) is considering re-registering as a Democrat and throwing his name into the hat.
A Complication
As I noted above, more than enough delegates have stated they were going to support Harris, but they are still not locked into their commitment.
From what I have read, the Dems are going to do a virtual roll call on or before August 7 to beat the formal deadline and avoid any legal challenges from the GOP.
With this little stunt they pulled, that is a wise choice because blocking their nomination at this point is fair game.
The DNC has already stated that all candidates must confirm their plans to run by Saturday, so don’t be surprised if Manchin decides to run.
He would still have two weeks to change delegates’ minds on Harris because she is far from a slam dunk to beat Trump.
If she adds Shapiro to her ticket, I think it will make this race much closer, but Harris has been anti-fracking since she announced her candidacy in 2020, so that could be a major problem for her in PA.
Manchin could be the more attractive candidate to moderates and independents, so he surely would, at the very least, make Harris work for the nomination.
Instead, less than 48 hours after Biden dropped out and Harris vowed to “earn” the nomination, the party has just about handed it to her on a silver platter.
Dems are already trying to spin this as though the people had a say in the matter, but they did not.
Just remember, the American voter did not select Kamala Harris… the elite in the Democrat Party did.
